Digitization Works Better than Analog Data Storage

In simple words, the process of conversion physical units or entity into digital formats (images, texts) is called digitization. The need of digitization is growing as fast as the pace of technology in all spheres, because unlike analog data, digital data is many steps ahead and safer to be used for a long term. The contrasting factor between digital data and analog data is that the latter degrades every time it gets transmitted or copied to some other source. Moreover, analog data is stored using physical media, like cassettes, floppies, DVDs, etc. So, keeping vigilance and maintaining a stock of all these items is a challenge in itself. Thus, whether you talk about analog data or traditional methods of preservation, it certainly was a costlier thing of yesteryears, however, since the advent of digitization, converting images, data or some other valuable text or scripts in the digital form has become easier. As preservation is now easy, implementing digitization for sharing, access and preservation of the information should be the first choice.

Let's see what are some valuable benefits associated with digitization, which can play an instrumental role in organizations incremental growth.

But before identifying its core benefits, it is better to reason out the difference between 'digitization for preservation'and 'digital preservation'. Under digitization for preservation, a variety of information from a variety of sources is converted (via scanning mostly) into digital data. Next, this data is used for storage, records and sharing purpose. This type of thing is quite common among institutes or museums, where their ageing artifacts, scripts or institutional repository are stored on digital platforms and saves their information for future use. Subsequently, their storage issues are sorted out.

On the other hand, digital preservation is not linked with converting a physical unit into digital media. Rather it is about taking care of already existing digital data that exists on cloud platforms, internet or some sort of servers. Even the information or data created directly on the computer seeks some degree of protection when it is aggregated or accumulated in the system. Hence, protecting or maintaining that sort of data along with the converted one is often referred as digital preservation.

Be it of any category: digitization for preservation and digital preservation, advantages of digitization can't be ignored.

Digitization facilitates a healthy automation which further avoids the chances of maneuverability and smoothens the trail audits thus increases the productivity of an organization.

With the data stored and available, it can be transmitted (broadcasted) anytime and anywhere, beyond geo-fencing. The data can be of high value in the networking system because it can be accessed and shared by millions of users at a time and from multiple locations.
